Can't talk right now (silent / coded call)

If you call 911 and can't speak: dial 911, then press 5-5 on the keypad — many U.S. dispatch centers recognize this as a silent call for help. If you can speak just one or two words, try: "Pizza." (some areas), or "I need help but I can't talk right now. Please send police to [address]." If someone is listening, pretend it's a wrong number or food order: "Yes, I'd like to order a large pepperoni for delivery to [your address]. Yes, I'm home alone, the door is locked." — then stay on the line. For the National DV Hotline (1-800-799-7233): you can text START to 88788 instead of calling. You can also chat at thehotline.org.

Calling a shelter

"Hi, I'm looking for safe housing for myself and my children. I'd like to know if you have space, or if you can refer me somewhere that does. I prefer to be contacted by [text only / app message]. Please don't leave a voicemail."

Calling a therapist

"I'm looking for someone trauma-informed who has experience with domestic violence. I'd like to know if you're accepting new clients, what insurance you accept, and whether telehealth is an option."

Talking to your child's school

"There is a safety concern involving my child's other parent. I need to update pickup permissions and emergency contacts. Please make this confidential and do not share my information with the other parent."

Asking a church or faith partner

"I'm in a difficult and unsafe situation and I need confidential support. Please do not contact my partner or share my situation without my permission. Are you able to help with [food / childcare / a safe place to stay / prayer / emergency funds]?"

Calling legal aid

"I need help understanding protective orders, custody, and safe housing options. I'd like to know if I qualify for free legal help and what documents you'll need."

Calling 211

"Hi, I'm looking for help with [housing / food / utilities / childcare] in [your city]. I'd prefer programs that are confidential and family-friendly. Can you give me 2 or 3 verified options?"
